How do I avoid burning out running a shop?
Guard a real day off, share or drop low-value tasks, and set closing rituals so the shop does not follow you home every night.
Treat your energy like stock: limited, valuable and worth protecting. Burnout creeps in when every day is a shop day and every evening is spent on paperwork.
Guard one full day
If the shop opens six or seven days, find cover for at least one, or close. Customers adapt to a consistent closed day faster than you expect.
Drop or share tasks
- List everything you do in a week.
- Mark what only you can do.
- Hand off, simplify or stop the rest, one at a time.
Close the day on purpose
Write tomorrow’s top three tasks, tidy the counter, turn off work notifications. A small ritual tells your brain the shift is over.
Talk to someone
Other shop owners understand in a way friends sometimes can’t. A coffee with a neighbouring trader helps. If low mood or exhaustion lasts, speak to a doctor or a qualified professional; this page is general encouragement, not medical advice.
Gentler weeks start with a few small changes.
